Crafting My Favorite Morning Matcha

I cut out coffee about eight years ago (maybe longer). Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the smell of coffee. I’m a NOLA girl who was raised on Café du Monde’s café au lait and beignets since the age of seven. But when I moved to Los Angeles, I had to drastically cut back on my coffee intake. For some reason, sitting in traffic on the 405 with caffeine jitters created so much stress and anxiety for me. I eventually read up on the effects of coffee and how it doesn’t do the body (or mind) any favors. So I decided to go cold turkey and cut it out.

I was in the midst of doing a play when someone asked in astonishment after I turned down their coffee offer, “You don’t drink coffee? How are you getting through rehearsal?” I didn’t know, but I was good.

For a few years, I went mainly caffeine-free, indulging occasionally in black or green teas and missing those Starbucks pumpkin spice lattes but having the willpower to never give in. It wasn’t until one day that I was introduced to Matcha. I seriously don’t remember how or who brought it to my attention, but after the first latte, I was in love!

Researching matcha, I discovered that its caffeine effects are nowhere near as intense as coffee and it also hosts a wealth of benefits. Matcha provides a more stable and sustained energy boost thanks to L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes calmness without drowsiness. This results in a smoother, more focused energy without the spikes and crashes associated with coffee. Additionally, matcha is rich in antioxidants, particularly catechins, which support overall health and boost metabolism.

So, I decided to buy a bag of matcha powder and add it to my morning smoothies. But I still longed for a nice hot cuppa something in the mornings and so I tried my hand at boiling water and adding creamer to the mix. What often turned out was a cup of clumped-up matcha.

Ever the adventurous Aquarius, I set my sights on finding a heater blender that would give me a labor-free, smooth morning matcha and bam! I found something on Amazon!

This little baby does it all! Yes, it’s a milk frother and honestly it’s not intended to have powders added to it, but it can handle my morning mixtures without a problem. It has four different settings: cold, hot chocolate, latte, and cappuccino. It can handle all nut and oat milks. And it’s just the perfect find for the perfect Matcha!

As shown in my IG post, I also add some red ginseng powder, ashwagandha root, and Happiness blend from Anima Mundi. These ingredients help me to start my day with a calm awakening and I never feel a crash like I used to with coffee or sugared beverages.

Red ginseng is known for its ability to boost energy, improve cognitive function, and enhance physical performance. It also has adaptogenic properties, helping the body adapt to stress and maintain balance. Ashwagandha, another powerful adaptogen, is celebrated for its stress-relieving properties and ability to enhance mental clarity and focus. It also supports overall wellness by boosting immunity and reducing inflammation.

I only use Elmhurst’s Walnut Milk. It’s super creamy and only has two ingredients: walnuts and water.

You’ve read this far, so here it is—my perfect Morning Matcha Latte. Enjoy!

What You’ll Need:

Milk Frother, 600W 4-in-1 Electric Milk Steamer

Alt: Milk Frother

Walnut milk

Ashwagandha root

Anima Mundi Apothecary Happiness Powder

• 2 teaspoons of Matcha

• 1/2 teaspoon of Red Ginseng

• 1/2 teaspoon of Ashwagandha root powder

• 1/2 teaspoon of Happiness Powder

• 1 cup of walnut milk or any milk of your liking

1. Put your cup of milk in the frother first, then add in all ingredients.

2. Select your preferred setting; I always use the latte setting.

3. Let it mix together. After approximately 4-5 minutes, it’s ready to enjoy!

Tip: Make sure to clean the frother while it’s still warm to avoid milk sticking to the stainless steel.

Enjoy your matcha morning!
