As an actress, self-taping has become an essential part of the audition process. Over the last 15 years of auditioning and self-taping, I’ve refined my setup to ensure my tapes look professional and polished while creating a comfortable and elevated space that meets my needs. I’m sharing my go-to equipment and how I set everything up to hopefully inspire or assist other actors in creating their own self-tape space.
Before I dive in, I want to say – you don’t need all of this to create a great self-tape. A lot can be achieved with your iPhone or smartphone, natural light, and a simple backdrop. This is just the setup that works best for me. It’s also easy to break down and set up, which makes it flexible for small spaces.
Staying Prepared as Hollywood Rebuilds
As Hollywood gears back up after the strikes and continues to recover from the slumps of the pandemic, self-tapes are more important than ever. The landscape is shifting, and while the future may be uncertain, one thing is clear – content creation isn’t slowing down. With the growing number of streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu, there will be a continuous demand for fresh talent and new stories in the years to come.
As artists, we must stay ready. Opportunities can come quickly, and being prepared to turn around a high-quality self-tape can make all the difference. Whether for a lead role or a small guest appearance, having your self-tape space dialed in allows you to focus on the performance – not the setup.
1. Backdrop & Frame for Self-Tape Auditions
A clean, neutral backdrop is crucial for self-tapes. I don’t switch out my backdrops often, but when I do, it’s simple and quick. I primarily use two options depending on the role and lighting:

- Charcoal Backdrop – I love the richness of a darker background, especially for dramatic scenes.
- Savage #12 Studio Gray (86” x 12 YD) – This is my favorite for most auditions. The gray tone is soft, versatile, and professional. Plus, when rolled up, it blends seamlessly into the room, making the space feel less cluttered. Check it out here.
To hang the backdrop securely, I use:

- Aoneky Nylon Twisted Rope – I cut the necessary length and tie it to secure the backdrop. Grab it here.
- 6-Inch Heavy Duty Screw Eyes Hooks – These are fixed into my ceiling to hold the backdrop firmly in place. Get them here.
- Carabiner Clips – For easy hanging and adjustment, I clip the backdrop directly onto the hooks. Find them here.
- 6-Inch Heavy Duty Spring Clamps – I use these to hold the fabric tight to eliminate any sagging. Essential clamps here.
2. Best Lighting Setup for Self-Tapes
Lighting can make or break a self-tape audition. Over time, I’ve discovered how much fun it is to fine-tune and experiment with my lighting setup. I rely on a combination of soft, even light sources to create a natural look:

- Aputure Amaran 200x S 200W Bi-Color LED – This powerful light allows me to adjust the color temperature depending on the mood of the scene. Check it out here.
- Lume Cube Studio Panel (2-Point Lighting Kit) – I use these edge-lit panels as fill lights to eliminate shadows and create a soft glow. They are compact yet incredibly effective. Find them here.
- Aputure Lantern Softbox – This is my secret weapon for soft, even light that mimics natural daylight. It spreads the light beautifully, reducing harsh shadows on my face. Check it out here.
- Newer Heavy Duty Light Stand – This stand holds my main light securely and can be adjusted to the perfect height. Available here.
- (2) Light Stand, 7-Foot Tripod – I use these to hold my additional lights or reflectors. Grab them here.
3. Camera & Audio for Professional Self-Tapes
Clear, high-quality visuals and crisp audio are vital. For that, I use:

- Canon AX55 Camcorder – This camera delivers sharp image quality and is easy to operate for solo taping. See it here.
- Azden SGM-250MX Shotgun Microphone – Audio clarity is just as important as video, and this mic picks up my voice perfectly while eliminating background noise. Check it out here.
- GEEKOTO Fluid Head Tripod – This professional tripod allows for smooth pan and tilt adjustments, giving my camera stability. Find it here.
👉 Don’t have a camera yet? Your iPhone or smartphone will absolutely get the job done! I’ve taped countless auditions on my phone with great results. Just make sure to use good lighting and a steady surface or tripod.
4. Virtual Auditions & Laptop Setup
For virtual auditions or live callbacks, I use my laptop. Keeping it at the right height makes a huge difference:

- Aluminum Universal Projector/Laptop Tripod Stand – This adjustable tripod stand lets me raise my laptop to eye level (no more awkward low angles). It’s sturdy and easy to adjust. Get it here.
