When I was a little girl, books used to mesmerize me. My Nanaw and I would sometimes take the streetcar to the New Orleans Public Library on St. Charles and stay in there for hours reading through books. It’s funny to remember how she had to limit me on the tons of books I wanted so badly to take home. In those books, I was able to escape to worlds I never knew of. I got to meet people who were no longer living. I got to smell and taste worldly foods. Learn about different cultures and travel far distances beyond this planet or travel deep within my soul.
Books are truly a gift to us and I love finding the time to read or listen to them whenever I can. Below are the two books I’ve recently completed and would highly recommend you check out! Take a look!
The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.

The Painted Drum
Written by Louise Erdrich

I came across the quote below one day on Facebook. It stopped me in my tracks. I sat back thinking about this quote for a few days. Feeling how it so deeply resonated with me and the many times I felt broken but was determined to keep going, keep loving, keep feeling. And so I had to buy this book. And I’m so glad I did. It was such an addictive read. I stayed up all night thumbing page by page. Louise’s writing just captivates the reader. She takes your hand, not explaining where you’re going but promising that you’ll go and you’ll grow.
Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up.
Louise Erdrich, The Painted Drum
What’s it about?
From the author of the National Book Award Winner The Round House, Louise Erdrich’s breathtaking, lyrical novel of a priceless Ojibwe artifact and the effect it has had on those who have come into contact with it over the years.
While appraising the estate of a New Hampshire family descended from a North Dakota Indian agent, Faye Travers is startled to discover a rare moose skin and cedar drum fashioned long ago by an Ojibwe artisan. And so begins an illuminating journey both backward and forward in time, following the strange passage of a powerful yet delicate instrument, and revealing the extraordinary lives it has touched and defined.
Compelling and unforgettable, Louise Erdrich’s Painted Drum explores the often-fraught relationship between mothers and daughters, the strength of family, and the intricate rhythms of grief with all the grace, wit, and startling beauty that characterizes this acclaimed author’s finest work.
